History of AUSA George Washington Chapter AUSA is a private, nonprofit educational organization dedicated to maintaining a strong national security with special interest in all components of the Army. The basic purpose of establishing AUSA was to provide an organization that could speak with one voice for the entire Army and civilians interested in the Army and national defense. The George Washington Chapter officially petitioned the AUSA Council of Trustees on October 24, 1967 to become a chapter in the Washington, D.C. area to include the boundaries of the Military District of Washington. LTG Walter L. Weible, (Ret), AUSA Executive Vice President, presented the approved charter to the then president, Dr. Ronald R. Kirks and Secretary, Henry Handler, on December 3, 1967, from its onset, it was clear that the charter would foster the principles of its chapter namesake, the father of our country. It is over 4,000 members strong and focuses on the four AUSA tenors:
The membership is comprised of Active duty soldiers, Reservists, National Guard, ROTC cadets at the Georgetown and Howard Universities, Retirees, Department of the Army civilians, and Industry partners. The chapter was cited as “The Best Overall Chapter” twice times in the past several years. It has also received many prestigious AUSA, Army Awards and Streamers over the years; “Best Newspaper”, “Army Ten Miler”, “Take the Hill”, “Merit and Chapter of Excellence”.
